SPAN 301S: SL in Latino Community
Description
Students enhance Spanish language communication skills via community service in local community agencies. (Offered fall semester). (Credit/No Credit Available)
Reflective Narrative:
This was one of my favorite classes to take in the Spanish major. I volunteered at Oscar F. Loya Elementary School in Salinas once a week during last semester. I tutored in between 3-7 students a day depending on their attendance. I tutored three first graders individually and three to four fifth graders in a group. All of my students came from Mexican descent and surprisingly many of them unfortunately did not know Spanish which I originally had the understanding that they would and I would be speaking Spanish every day. Some understood Spanish but did not speak so I tried as much as I could to help them with their understanding and speaking abilities which was actually a lot of fun for me because I felt like I was a big help. I felt as if it was my social responsibility to help them not lose their culture and language because being a second-language learner I realize how valuable it is to speak Spanish on a daily basis, especially in an area like Salinas. I played games and did activities everyday where Spanish and English translation was incorporated to improve both mine and their abilities with both languages.
