MLO 2: Language and Linguistic Knowledge
The student develops an understanding of the structure of the Spanish language and is able to use an appropriate level of formality according to the situation, whether in writing or in speech.
The student completes between two and six courses (depending on his or her choice of emphasis, as either language and linguistics knowledge or literary and cultural knowledge) related to the Spanish language and linguistics. These courses deal with: the sound system of Spanish, the history of Spanish, advanced grammar, Spanish-English translation, a general introduction to Spanish linguistics, Spanish for professional application (medical, legal, etc. spheres), composition and conversation.
Reflective Narrative:
To fulfill this MLO I took SPAN 305 Spanish for the Professions. In this class we dealt with the using Spanish in the business world. I learned an immense amount of vocabulary and had to use it on a daily basis by writing business letters. This class really helped with my vocabulary and writing skills which will be needed if I would like to use Spanish in the business world which I plan on doing in a bilingual atmosphere. This MLO is plays a very important role in learning Spanish. It's easy to speak on a daily basis but when extending one's vocabulary and trying to use it is the hard part. Being challenged is exactly what this class and MLO did. I was challenged everyday to extend my vocabulary and to better my writing skills. And even more of a challenge was translating business language into Spanish and English. Both languages use different words and types of sentence structure while constructing a business letter and it was definitely a challenge I took on and am still working on unto this day. A goal of mine is to keep extending my vocabulary to be able to sound scholarly in my second language in anything that I might need to write down. When learning a second language it is easy to concentrate on slang so one can be understood by their peers but writing in a professional manner is a whole different story. All of these challenges helped me grow into the speaker and writer that I am in my second language. On every homework assignment I need to look up words while translating into English or Spanish and this MLO challenged me to do all of the translations in and outside of class time which put me on the spot to use all different types of vocabulary.
