Personal Statement
I was one of those students who changed their majors several times because I am interested in many subjects. After many years of being indecisive I chose to be a Spanish major. When I had entered CSUMB I had declared a Spanish minor; it had always been an interest of mine. The influence from that came from deciding to study abroad in Santiago de Chile. I studied abroad for a year and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, like any other exchange student would say. I was attracted to the Spanish major for many reasons, number one being bilingual. I have always been interested in the Spanish language especially being surrounded by the diverse cultures in California.
My ultimate goal is to be a bilingual high school counselor and the first step to start that would be to study Spanish. After graduating from CSUMB I plan to apply for a graduate program in Counseling. I am hoping to be surrounded by a diverse population where I am able to use my Spanish speaking abilities on an everyday basis. By taking SPAN 301S, Service Learning, I began exploring the beginning of my career. I volunteered at an elementary school and counseled and tutored students outside of class time. By volunteering with first and fifth graders I have realized how well I do with older students and that’s why I have chosen to be a high school counselor instead of elementary or middle school.
My ideal work atmosphere would be to counsel high school students. Counseling can be a variation of helping students with college applications, problems at home, personal needs, general help with schooling, etc. Overall, I would love to talk to students about any help they might need to be successful in their future schooling, careers, and personal lives.
